The prophets / About this book

Habakkuk

Habakkuk questions God about unchecked violence, then struggles with the answer he receives. Complaint, watchful waiting and a prayer of trust shape the book. The final confidence does not deny empty fields or failed harvests; it is voiced in their presence.

How to read this book

Ask who is speaking, who is being addressed, and what concern the passage names. Prophetic writing can move between warning, accusation, promise, and hope. Notice these changes rather than giving every paragraph the same tone.

Give images room to work within their setting. Read the surrounding section before applying a line to a present-day event, and keep a note of references or questions that need more study. An honest question is more useful than a hurried certainty.

3Why do you show me iniquity, and look at perversity? For destruction and violence are before me. There is strife, and contention rises up.

4Therefore the law is paralyzed, and justice never prevails; for the wicked surround the righteous; therefore justice comes out perverted.

5“Look among the nations, watch, and wonder marvelously; for I am working a work in your days which you will not believe though it is told you.
