THE PASSAGE · WORLD ENGLISH BIBLE
1 Thessalonians 5:16–24
16Always rejoice.
17Pray without ceasing.
18In everything give thanks, for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus toward you.
19Don’t quench the Spirit.
20Don’t despise prophecies.
21Test all things, and hold firmly that which is good.
22Abstain from every form of evil.
23May the God of peace himself sanctify you completely. May your whole spirit, soul, and body be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
24He who calls you is faithful, who will also do it.

Before you move on
The brief calls to joy, prayer and thanksgiving stand beside the task of testing everything and holding on to the good. The passage ends with God’s faithfulness. Gratitude therefore does not mean accepting every voice without examination or calling harm good. Try writing two sentences side by side: one about what is difficult and one about something good within or alongside it. Neither has to cancel the other.
Read the passage again if you want to. Notice which word, action, or question stays with you. You can finish a reading without having finished thinking about it.
A MOMENT TO REFLECT
What do you want neither to minimize nor overlook today? Write an honest sentence about the burden and another about the good.
