James 1:16–18

16Don’t be deceived, my beloved brothers.

17Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom can be no variation nor turning shadow.

18Of his own will he gave birth to us by the word of truth, that we should be a kind of first fruits of his creatures.

EDITORIAL REFLECTION · NOT SCRIPTURE

Before you move on

James speaks of good gifts and the Father in whom there is no shifting light. Birth through the word of truth also belongs to this passage. Read these words against the preceding distinction: temptation to evil is not attributed to God. Good things in life often have a history of care, work and opportunities received. Notice one such history rather than looking only at your own result.

Read the passage again if you want to. Notice which word, action, or question stays with you. You can finish a reading without having finished thinking about it.

A MOMENT TO REFLECT

What good gift have you not brought about alone? Whose contribution to it would you like to acknowledge today?
